Own The Official FIDE Chess Set The Grandmasters Use

There are a million chess sets available. Some simple, some creaky and homemade, some incredibly expensive.

But if you're trying to figure out the best one to buy, it's always a good idea to see what the pros (like Magnus Carlsen, above) use. Simple, tasteful, and full of more credibility than any other chess set out there, the Official FIDE Chess Set is what your table needs.

The set, designed for the 2014 World Championship Match, was designed by Daniel Well, a renowned architect and designer for the firm Pentagram, using the proportions of classic Greek architecture.

Each square of the rosewood board measures 50 millimeters, resulting in a 50 centimeter board weighing 10 pounds.

The set runs for $320 without the board, but you can get one for $470 with the board, or buy it separately for $190. The official site is frequently sold out, but Amazon still has the set.

It comes in a box, but you should probably have this set up on the table at all times.
